Taichi and Qigong for Digestion, Stomach & Spleen

In the Tai Chi Qigong for Kidney & Longevity Course, we discussed in detail, pre-natal qi, which we inherit from our parents and its significance to our health. If your pre-natal qi is weak, it is important to focus on replenishing the kidneys. Equally vital is the post-natal qi.

One major way we acquire this post-natal qi is from the food we eat. If you look at the Chinese character for Qi 氣, it is composed of two parts. On top is 气 which is the graphic symbol used to indicate any type of gas e.g. 氫氮氧 (hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen). At the bottom of 氣 is the character for rice: 米. And since rice is a major staple food in Asia, this points to the fact that according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), food is regarded as being a primary source of qi.

In TCM, the spleen plays a significant role in digestion, which includes the conversion of food into qi to nourish the other organs. First, the stomach ferments and digests the food, and then the spleen extracts the qi from it. This food-extracted “Spleen qi”, called “Qu Qi”, is then transported throughout the entire body to nourish and bring health to all the organs. For instance, all our organs use this qi to counteract the downward pull of gravity that could otherwise potentially cause “organ prolapse”, with all its accompanying symptoms; the muscles need this qi to maintain their mass and strength; the mind needs it to maintain sufficient mental focus for effective cognitive processing and clear meditative awareness. So, a strong spleen also prevents the mind from wandering during meditation. In addition, the spleen is in charge of transportation of the body’s fluids. Thus, bloating and swelling may result when it is not functioning properly. The spleen also helps to create saliva and blood. Therefore, TCM advises that if your post-natal qi is weak, focus on replenishing and strengthening the spleen.
