Medical Tai Chi Qigong for Health Series

The 21st century is noted for numerous technological advances that have been designed to improve our existence, and yet we are still challenged by a multitude of major health issues which modern science has been unable to prevent or cure.  So now is an appropriate time to focus our attention toward understanding and assimilating various medical principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine, known as “TCM”.

Medical qigong foundation

TCM model of sickness and health is based upon ancient wisdom derived from Daoist philosophy, which emphasizes the importance of establishing a harmonious relationship and interaction between all aspects of one’s life. The principles of this medical system arose from a profound realization of “Qi”, the vital life force which determines the quality of our health and wellbeing.

All life forms are governed by the forces of Yin and Yang, and by the phases of the 5 Elements (Wu Xing) symbolized by wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. TCM and Daoist medicine share a common holistic approach which attempts to achieve a healthy balance between mind, body, and spirit, in its relation to Nature, the Cosmos, and human society.

Generally speaking, Daoists view health as being our ‘natural state’, and therefore believe that the body can cure itself if it is allowed to return to a state of natural inner balance. Every illness is regarded as being the outcome of dysfunctional qi (and blood) flow – deficient or excess qi, or blockages and stagnation in the flow of qi, all of which are influenced by our thoughts and emotions.

So, in TCM the quality of qi flow is regarded as being the fundamental determinant of health, vigour and longevity. Although this approach may seem quite different from the Western medical view of health and sickness, current research in physics, biology and neurophysiology is beginning to yield results which support TCM’s energy-based understanding of illness and wellbeing.

Many diseases develop unnoticed for a significant amount of time before they are detected. While Western medicine focuses primarily on people who are already sick, in order to treat their various illnesses and symptoms, in contrast to this, the goal of Traditional Chinese Medicine is to locate, and remove the specific source of any blockages and imbalances in the flow of blood and qi that could lead to illness. So TCM, far more so than Western medicine, strives to maintain the body in a state of optimum, harmonious balance in order to empower the immune system to prevent the initial onset of illness. So if sickness does strike, the first and most important step in TCM is to discover its source.

As stated in the Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic (the doctrinal basis of TCM), “In order to treat and cure diseases one must search into their origin.” Imagine a seed of a tree buried in the ground waiting to sprout. When the conditions are right, it grows upward. But if the seed does not develop healthy roots, it will be unable to break the surface of the earth, so it will not develop into a tree. Based on this understanding of nature, the ancient Chinese medical approach is to focus on the root of any problem, thereby eliminating the root cause of any particular disease which, as mentioned earlier, is normally a disruption, or imbalance of qi that arises from physical blockages and/or emotional disturbances.

Normally, by just practicing Tai Chi Qigong Shibashi, our most popular program, is good enough to restore the balance. We have received thousands of testimonials of how people got better from practicing Shibashi alone. However, if you have a particular illness, or weakness in certain organs or systems, by practicing some specific techniques targeting them would be very helpful, in addition to qigong Shibashi .

That’s why Master Cheung has created this new medical qigong series. In these courses, he shares the TCM and Daoist approaches for dealing with specific health issues, which will empower you to take responsibility for your own health. These ancient practices have endured the test of time, having been developed and refined over a period of several thousand years. For the most part, the exercises are quite simple, so do not be fooled into thinking they need to be more complicated to be effective. Let us follow the Dao De Jing, and “Take on difficulties while they are easy.”

Tai Chi and Qigong for Lung & Immunity – According to TCM, our immunity is the best weapon against any sickness. Thus, one of its major approach is to create the proper environment for the body to boost its own immunity, so that the patients can heal themselves naturally. Wei Qi which is related to our lungs is our first defense against pathogens, toxins, and harmful conditions. As the global pandemic happens more and more often, it is very important to maintain strong immunity and wei qi to protect ourselves.

Tai Chi and Qigong for Kidney, Vitality & Longevity – In the holistic TCM view, kidney refers to more than just the 2 little organs inside the lower back. The kidney system includes the urinary, endocrine, reproductive, and auditory systems, as well as the brain and bones. Our strength, health and longevity depend primarily on our life essence which is also stored in the Kidney.

Tai Chi and Qigong for Liver & Gall Bladder – In TCM, liver is associated with the gallbladder. It influences the health of the joints, tendons, ligaments, eyes and nails. The liver stores blood and regulates its volume in order to nourish and maintain the healthy physiological functioning of various parts of the body by ensuring that the qi and blood flow smoothly. When the liver is out of balance, one may experience, irritability, anger, mood swings, depression, poor sleep quality, insomnia, dizziness, migraine, poor memory, as well as many menstrual related issues.

Tai Chi and Qigong for Spleen, Stomach & Digestion – In TCM, the spleen plays a significant role in digestion, which includes the conversion of food into qi to nourish the other organs. First, the stomach ferments and digests the food, and then the spleen extracts the qi from it. This food-extracted “Spleen qi”, called “Qu Qi”, is then transported throughout the entire body to nourish and bring health to all the organs.  Therefore, TCM advises that if your post-natal qi is weak, focus on replenishing and strengthening the spleen.

Tai Chi and Qigong for Diabetes – The aim of the western medical approach to diabetes is to maintain blood sugar levels within a normal range, while providing sufficient insulin for the body’s needs. However, according to TCM, this fails to address the source of the problem because when the body fails to produce insulin (Type I diabetes) or is unable to use the insulin that is produced (Type 2 diabetes), these dysfunctions are regarded merely as symptoms which indicate that the body is in a serious state of imbalance. Instead, TCM believes that the root cause of diabetes is a weakness of Yin Qi, especially that which is associated with the liver, kidney and spleen qi.
